High Heels In High Places

HIGH HEELS IN HIGH PLACES is about strong, cutting-edge career women who through courage, resilience and wisdom have helped to redefine the place and positioning of women of color in music and entertainment. These women have made significant achievements with few role models or mentors… and sometimes with little social support. They are NABFEME trailblazers; women who seized the moment, took advantage of emerging opportunities and helped create new standards, thus becoming prototypes for professional career growth. We have an opportunity to learn from their experiences and enable ourselves to develop stronger and more definitive careers.

This page is not about showcasing super stars or well-known women. Rather it is about typical career women who represent untypical career advancement circumstances. You will be inspired, shocked, amused and amazed by their stories. By sharing their career stories with you, NABFEME hopes to honor these women for their ability and while allowing you to profit from their experiences.

Shero Hall of Fame

The NABFEME SHERO is a woman of color whose achievements have opened doors and set new standards for the entertainment industry. The challenges and experiences of the Shero have built the foundation for the careers of today’s women in music and entertainment.

NABFEME SHEROES come in every imaginable shape, size and color… and they manifest their Sheroism in infinite ways. The strength and fortitude of our Shero foremothers in the entertainment industry paved the way for today’s executive divas and goddesses. The accomplishments of these women are quite stunning in light of the fact that there was, for whatever reason, an un-talked about system that always put men on top. Battling exclusion and seclusion, these incredible women risked it all to create the opportunities for the careers we hold today. These are the “Wonder Women” who didn’t take no for an answer and went to straight to the head of the class! Here we profile our esteemed women of courage who are our Sheroes, the women who make up the NABFEME SHERO HALL OF FAME.

The Rocks

Webster’s Random House Dictionary defines ROCK as “something resembling a rock, as in firmness or support; foundation.”

As you peruse the NABFEME website, we’re sure many different images come to mind. And, rarely do these images include men. We have always welcomed male involvement in what we do at NABFEME and that involvement has received many mixed reactions. Some sisters embrace the male presence as integral parts of our success, while others see men as a group incapable of understanding women’s issues.

Regardless of what side you’re on, men have been and continue to be an effective part of our growth in music and entertainment. Support for NABFEME, its programs and services continue to arise from many male entertainment executives. Many are involved because they see themselves as a part of both the existing entertainment patriarchy and the solution.
